BRIEF HISTORY OF HIP-HOP CULTURE

In the early years of the culture, the movement went untitled until Afrika Bambaataa coined the phrase “Hip-Hop” from a term that rapper Love Bug Starski used in his rhymes.  In the 1970’s, ten years prior to gaining global recognition, Hip-Hop was a celebration of life.  Today, Hip-Hop is a legitimate cultural movement which is expressed through various artistic mediums we call elements.  The four main elements are known as Mcing (The Rapper), Djing (The Disc Jockey), Writing (The Aerosol Artist), and several dance forms that include Breaking, Up-Rocking, Popping, and Locking.  Bambaataa, who also introduced Knowledge as the fifth element, is internationally recognized as the Godfather of Hip-Hop.  In addition to these elements, various others such as vocal percussion (beat boxing) and fashion have been embraced.  Eventually, all the elements developed and transformed into their own cultural movements.

In the last twenty years, Hip-Hop Culture has greatly influenced the entertainment industry with its creative contributions to music, dance, visual arts, poetry, and fashion.  Due to its energy, dynamics, and momentum, Hip-Hop has become a tradition for many societies and ultimately a key to social reform, as well as a billion dollar a year industry.  Furthermore, the Hip-Hop lifestyle has provided a positive alternative for many of today's misguided youth.  Through Hip-Hop, there lies a vast array of job opportunities and recreational activities that were previously non-existent to the young segment of society.  Today, we have artists and personalities from "The Block" becoming multi-millionaires from their contributions to Hip-Hop culture.  We must ensure that all children have an equal chance to pursue their dreams and express their chosen art forms.

The official birthday of Hip-Hop is November 12, 1974.  The official birthday of the Universal Zulu Nation is November 12, 1973.  The world should recognize these dates and the month of November as Hip-Hop History Month.  These dates are a significant part of American history and should be remembered by all.  This anniversary celebration has been kept alive for thirty (30+) consecutive years in order to pay tribute to the pioneers that laid the foundation and to those who are continuing the rich tradition.

With your help, this year will be another distinguished success!

Thank You,

“The Anniversary Committee”
